What makes a great youth program facilitator

The four frameworks every facilitator should be using — and how to coach your staff on each.

Great facilitators aren't born; they're trained on four frameworks.

1. Maslow's hierarchy, applied to youth programming

Kids who are hungry, tired, or unsafe can't learn. Address physiological and safety needs first — every time.

2. Stages of group development

Forming → storming → norming → performing → adjourning. Knowing which stage you're in tells you what kind of facilitation the group needs that day.

3. The What / So What / Now What reflection model

The simplest debrief framework that exists. Use it after every activity.

4. The levels of program engagement

From "warm body" to "leading peers." Know where each kid is so you can stretch them one level at a time.
